The Friends’ School runs two out of three IB programmes, offering the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) for all students from Kinder to Year 6, and also offering students in Years 11 and 12 the opportunity to study for the International Baccalaureate Diploma.
The focus on global knowledge and understanding, and the emphasis on the education of the whole person to be found in the International Baccalaureate Programmes fit well with the Purpose and Concerns of The Friends’ School.
The PYP programme focuses on the development of the whole child, providing a framework to meet the academic, cultural, physical, social and spiritual development of each child. It enables the teaching team to embed the Australian Curriculum outcomes in a rich Programme of Inquiry – designed to motivate and challenge each child’s learning and development.
With a similar approach to the PYP, the two-year Diploma Programme (DP) is also rigorous and intellectually coherent, encouraging critical thinking through the study of a wide range of subjects in the traditional disciplines while encouraging an international perspective and therefore international mindedness. The standards of education expected by the DP match those of The Friends’ School, ensuring students leave the school with the best possible preparation for life after school.
Many universities in Australia have embraced the IB Diploma as a tertiary qualification seeing it as the pre-eminent standard for pre-tertiary education. Consequently, the International Baccalaureate Diploma is compared favourably with other pre-tertiary qualifications including the Tasmanian Certificate of Education and is often preferred by universities overseas.
