The Friends' School

Languages Faculty

Language courses at The Friends’ School are based on the Australian Curriculum Language standards and guidelines (due for full implementation in 2016). Our policy is that all students from Kindergarten through to the end of Year 8 will take at least one Language other than English, and that we support and encourage all students to continue with that study through into Years 11 and 12.

“We seek to help our students develop as people who will think clearly, act with integrity, make decisions for themselves… and hold a global perspective”.

Year 7 Languages

This program offers 10-week introductory courses in each of the languages listed below.

These courses enable students to communicate general information about themselves and see students exposed to various aspects of the related cultures.

  • Chinese – students are also exposed to selected characters
  • French – Touché is the text of choice
  • German – students recognise many similarities between the English language and German in basic greetings, counting, colours and the family.
  • Japanese – there is a focus on developing confidence with the Hiragana characters.

Students study one Asian and one European language a semester. They are then asked to choose one or more languages for further study in Year 8 and may continue through to Year 12.
