The Friends’ School is the first independent school in Tasmania to achieve Gold Standard accreditation with Tasmanian School Canteen Association, and the first Tasmanian school to achieve accreditation from Kindergarten through to Year 12. Gold Standard is the highest accreditation possible within this program.
The School Canteen Accreditation Program promotes best practice for canteen management and a whole school approach to healthy eating. The whole school approach combines a healthy and nutritious canteen menu with other healthy initiatives across the School, including curricular elements and promotion of healthy activities.
Having students who are healthy and happy has always been the top priority for the School and this accreditation achievement shows our dedication to providing students with healthy lifestyle choices and nutritious lunch options, perfect for growing minds and bodies.
Childhood obesity is still a big issue in Australia, with the obesity rate for Tasmanian children aged 5 to 17 rising from 18.6% to almost 30% in the four years to 2011-12. Schools play a large part in educating and facilitating healthy living choices for students, particularly as eating habits have been linked to cognitive function in young people by several academic studies.
