The Friends' School

Scholarship Application Preparation and Requirements

Application Preparation

It is not the School’s practice to issue copies of examination papers set in previous years. Written examination papers will be set to discover students’ abilities and potential, rather than to test any knowledge of specific syllabuses. We encourage students to come along relaxed, open-minded and to simply try their best.

Music Audition Information
Candidates will be required to perform two short contrasting pieces on their principal instrument or voice and if they choose, one piece on a second or third instrument.

In addition, they will be interviewed about their musical contribution to their current school and their potential to make a contribution at Friends’ in 2019 and beyond.

Where the pieces performed are written/arranged for piano accompaniment, it is desirable than an accompanist be present. It is the responsibility of the candidate to supply, and pay for, an accompanist. Kathy Fazackerley, one of the School’s piano tutors, is available to accompany students for auditions if required. Candidates will need to pay Kathy directly for rehearsal and performance time. Kathy may be contacted by phoning the School switchboard or emailing her at kfazackerley@friends.tas.edu.au. Applicants are welcome to seek the assistance of another accompanist, at the candidate’s expense, should they prefer.

Candidates are strongly advised to not leave it to the last minute to contact an accompanist

Candidates should also submit additional documents in support of their application. These should include up to four samples of school work, a music resume listing musical achievements and milestones to date, and up to five additional documents relating to the applicant’s musical experience.

The samples of school work should be chosen to demonstrate the student’s commitment to study and may be chosen from any area of the curriculum. The work needs to have been completed in the last twelve months.

Documents pertaining to the applicant’s musical experience could include: AMEB examination reports; eisteddfod adjudicator’s comments; a list of musical achievements and experiences; concert programs; a written reference from a music tutor etc.

It is requested that this material is provided electronically by being uploaded using the online application form.

Candidates are also required to ask two of the following to complete an online questionnaire: a class teacher, a classroom music teacher and/or a school principal. The questionnaire may be found below in the application requirements section.
