Co-curricular Music at Morris

A number of instrumental and vocal ensembles are available at Morris.  Please see below for a list of these ensembles, eligibility criteria, and rehearsal times.

 

  • To join a band or string ensemble, talk to the relevant staff member.
  • To join a choir or marimba group, students may simply just turn up!

 

Year 5 Band

This beginner concert band is for Year 5 students who are interested in playing a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument.  Students commence band sessions in small instrumental groups as they start learning to play their instrument, forming a balanced concert band in Term 2.

Rehearsals:  Thursday afternoons, 3.00pm – 4.00pm

Venue:  Sheila Given Music Centre, High School Campus (students are escorted from Morris)

Staff:  Marg Reid, Catherine Morris, Tracey Patten and Craig Russell, with additional tutors in Term 1.

 

Morris Band

This concert band is for students who play a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument and have at least a year’s experience playing their instrument.

Rehearsals:  Friday mornings, 7.45am – 8.30am (students are escorted to Morris after rehearsal)

Venue:  Sheila Given Music Centre, High School Campus

Staff:  Marg Reid, Suzi Gillespie and Tracey Patten

 

Morris Minors Choir

This is a fun singing group comprising of all students in Year 2, who will rehearse and perform a mini-musical.

Rehearsals:  Friday afternoons, 2.10pm – 3.00pm  (Terms 3 and 4 only)

Venue:  The Farrall Centre

Staff:  Suzi Gillespie and Kathy Fazackerley

 

Morris Majors Choir

This is an unauditioned choir comprising of students from Years 3 and 4.  The choir sings both unison and part-songs in a range of styles.  All students are welcome.

Rehearsals:  Friday mornings, 8.00am – 8.45am

Venue:  Morris music room

Morris Maestros Choir

This is an unauditioned choir comprising of students from Years 5 and 6.  The choir sings both unison and part-songs in a range of styles.  All students are welcome.  Every second year, the Morris Maestros join the Year 7/8 Choir and choirs from around Tasmania to participate in the Festival of Voices’ “Tasmania Sings” event.

Rehearsals:  Thursday mornings, 8.00am – 8.45am

Year 3 Marimba Ensemble

This group plays energetic and fun music on tuned percussion instruments.  No experience is necessary as music and playing technique are taught from the first rehearsal.

Rehearsals:  Monday lunchtimes, 10.50am – 11.40am

Year 4 Marimba Ensemble

This group plays energetic and fun music on tuned percussion instruments.  No experience is necessary as music and playing technique are taught from the first rehearsal.

Year 5/6 Marimba Ensemble

This group plays energetic and fun music on tuned percussion instruments.  No experience is necessary as music and playing technique are taught from the first rehearsal.  The Year 5/6 Marimba Ensemble joins the Year 7/8 Marimba Group and schools from around the Hobart area to participate in the annual “Marimba Mania” event.

Rehearsals:  Tuesday mornings, 8.00am – 8.40am

Year 2 Strings

This group is for Year 2 students who are interested in beginning to play violin or cello.  Students receive group tuition from specialist teachers as they start learning to play their instrument, with group performance becoming a focus as skills and techniques are learnt.

Rehearsals:  Tuesday afternoons, 2.10pm – 3.00pm

Year 3 Strings

This group is for students who took part in the Year 2 string program and would like to continue their playing through group lessons.

Rehearsals:  Tuesday afternoons, 3.00pm – 3.45pm

Morris String Ensemble

This ensemble is for students learning violin, viola, cello or double bass, who already have some skill on their instrument.  Students who can proficiently read and play a D major scale on their instrument and recognise simple rhythms are encouraged to join.

Rehearsals:  Wednesday mornings, 7.45am – 8.45am

Morris Chamber Groups

These groups extend string players who are ready for an extra challenge.  Memberships of these groups are small and may rotate throughout the year at the discretion of staff.

Rehearsals:  Tuesday / Wednesday lunchtimes, 11.00am – 11.40am

Morris Classical Guitar Group

This group is for students interested in learning how to play classical guitar.  Experience is not necessary, as our tutor runs lessons during the group time.

Rehearsals:  Thursday lunchtimes, 11.00am – 11.40am

Performances

These ensembles perform at various school functions, along with performances in the wider community.  Participation in music ensembles is a fun, social activity.  Once students have committed to an ensemble it is expected that they honour that commitment throughout the year by attending rehearsals and performances regularly and on time.  Students should be present at rehearsal and ready to start at the listed time.

Performance uniforms for Morris ensembles are as follows:

  • Years 3 and 4:
  • Striped top (long sleeved preferred), navy track pants, white socks and black shoes. Girls should wear blue or red hair accessories.
  • Years 5 and 6:

Boys – grey trousers, blue shirt, navy jacket, grey socks and black shoes

Girls – white blouse with the school skirt and navy tights or grey trousers and navy jacket with blue or red hair accessories

 

Instrumental and Vocal Tuition

As part of the School’s co-curricular music program students may also learn to play an instrument or sing. We employ over 30 highly experienced tutors, providing weekly one-to-one lessons on an instrument and/or voice.

The Mona Chepmell Awards for Instrumental and Vocal Tuition are available for outstanding music students, and applications are sought in Term 1 via the School’s e-newsletter What’s On.

The parent group, Friendsmusic, is an invaluable part of Music at Friends’. It meets regularly to plan fundraising events and support the activities of the Music program. It is a highly effective and dynamic group, contributing significantly to the School community.
