Co-curricular Music at Morris

A number of instrumental and vocal ensembles are available at Morris. Please see below for a list of these ensembles, which students are eligible to be involved in each, and rehearsal times for 2015.

  • To join a band or string ensemble, talk to the relevant staff member.
  • To join a choir or marimba group, students may simply just turn up!

Year 5 Band
This concert band is for Year 5 students who are interested in playing a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument, and is a beginner band. Students commence band sessions in small instrumental groups as they start learning to play their instrument, forming a balanced concert band in Term 2.
Rehearsals: Monday afternoons, 3.00pm – 4.00pm
Venue: The Farrall Centre
Staff: Marg Reid, Kerry Bennett, Craig Russell, Tracey Patten, with additional tutors in Term 1

This concert band is for students who play a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument and have at least a year’s experience playing their instrument.
Reherasals: Tuesday mornings, 8.00am – 8.40am
Venue: The Farrall Centre

Morris Minors Choir
This is a fun singing group comprising of all students in Year 2.
Rehearsals: Friday afternoons, 2.00pm – 2.45pm (Terms 3 and 4 only)
Venue: The Farrall Centre

Morris Majors Choir TFS_MusicConcert_May2015-5842
This is an unauditioned choir comprising of students from Years 3 and 4. The choir sings both unison and part-songs in a range of styles. All students are welcome.
Rehearsals: Thursday mornings, 8.00am – 8.45am

Morris Maestros Choir
This is an unauditioned choir comprising of students from Years 5 and 6. The choir sings both unison and part-songs in a range of styles. All students are welcome.
Rehearsals: Wednesday mornings, 8.00am – 8.45am

Year 3/4 Marimba Group
This group plays energetic and fun music on tuned percussion instruments. No experience is necessary as music and playing technique is taught from the first rehearsal.
Rehearsals: Tuesday lunchtimes, 11.00am – 11.40am

Year 3 Strings
This group is for students who took part in the Year 2 string program and would like to continue their playing through group lessons.

Morris String Ensemble TFS_MusicConcert_May2015-5722
This ensemble is for students learning violin, viola, cello or double bass, who already have some skill on their instrument. Students who can proficiently read and play a D major scale on their instrument and recognise simple rhythms are encouraged to join.
Rehearsals: Friday mornings, 7.45am – 8.45am
Venue: The Farrall Centre

Morris Chamber Group
This group extends string players who are ready for an extra challenge. Membership of this group is small and will rotate throughout the year at the discretion of staff.
Rehearsals: Friday lunchtime, 11.00am – 11.40am
Venue: The Farrall Centre foyer

Important Information
These ensembles perform at various school functions, along with performances in the wider community. Once students have committed to an ensemble, it is expected that they honour that commitment throughout the year by attending rehearsals and performances regularly and on time.

Instrumental and Vocal Tuition

As part of the School’s co-curricular music program students may also learn to play an instrument or sing. We employ over 30 highly experienced tutors, providing weekly one-to-one lessons on an instrument and / or voice.

Performance uniforms for these ensembles are:Cello
Years 3 and 4
School polo top (long sleeved preferred), School navy track pants, white socks and black shoes.
Girls should wear blue or red hair accessories.

Years 5 and 6
Boys – Grey trousers, blue shirt with school tie, navy jacket, grey socks and black shoes
Girls – School tartan skirt, white blouse, skirt, navy tights and navy jacket, blue or red hair accessories
