The Friends' School

Our Care

Early Learning

At Friends’ Early Years, we start caring and educating children from 3 months of age. In our Early Learning program students will be placed into one of three rooms:

  • Green Room: At the start of the year, children in this room will be between 3 to 13 months of age
  • Orange Room: At the start of the year, children in this room will be between 14 months to 2 years old
  • Red Room: At the start of the year, children in this room will be between 2 to 3 years old.

All our programs utilise a ‘play-based’ approach to learning that engages young minds in fun learning experiences.

Pre-Kindergarten

Our Pre-Kindergarten room provides a high-quality preschool program that prepares children for their Kindergarten year.

Guided by The Purpose and Concerns Statement of The Friends’ School, The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia and the Reggio Emilia Project, our Pre-Kindergarten helps children to ‘learn how to learn’ by immersing them in an exciting, inspiring and thought-provoking learning environment, rich in playfu

l exploration, teacher assisted investigations and group project work.

Our Pre-Kindergarten routinely uses the resources, networks and infrastructure of the broader Friends’ School community; including the daily use of the primary school grounds and play equipment, thrice weekly visits from the grade 6 Leaders who assist with our learning programs and a weekly visit to the primary school library.

Our Pre-Kindergarten includes:

  • A play-based approach to the introduction of Literacy skills and concepts
  • A play-based approach to the introduction of Mathematics skills and concepts
  • Developmental play activities
  • Learning experiences based upon the interests of the pre-kindergarten children who attend the program
  • Library.
  • News time
  • Introduction to Information Technology as a means of expressing ideas and accessing information.
  • Group project work

Our Pre-Kindergarten, which provides a service to ou

r entire community, is not intended to be a tightly structured, teacher-led environment. We introduce children to skills in literacy and mathematics but our focus is on cultivating and growing each child’s natural curiosity in order to inspire a life-long love of learning. We seek to help the children learn how to learn.  For children under the age of five we firmly believe, on the basis of current research, that this goal is best achieved through play-based activities and hands-on exploration.

While our program does include teacher assisted investigations and group project work, it is not our aim or objective to run a Pre-Kindergarten based upon pre-determined term by term learning programs.

The above approach to early learning is well regarded and extensively practised but is not consistent with a heavily pre-planned, learning program in which the learning activities for each term are decided in advance.

Pre-Kindergarten operates throughout the year from our Pre-Kindergarten Classroom in the Friends’ Early Years building. The core program operates from 9:00am to 3:00pm but children may attend anytime from 7:30am through to 6:00pm.

Pre-Kindergarten is charged at the same daily rate as our younger early learning programs and the Child Care Subsidy also applies.
