High School Information 17.11.2017
Year 7 Film Festival
All Year 7 students will be involved in a four-day Film Festival from Tuesday 5 December to Friday 8 December inclusive. Students will work outside their current key teaching groups in newly formed groups for this project. In order to facilitate the final groups, parents are asked to contact Nicola Collins at your earliest convenience to let her know if students will be departing early for holidays or if they will be absent for some or all of this time due to sporting or other commitments. This information should also be shared with your child’s Tutor and Head of House.
Colony 47 Christmas Appeal and End of Year Gathering Giving Tree
High School Tutor Groups are asked to donate items for the End of Year Gathering Giving Tree which will be donated to Colony 47. Colony 47 organises the only Christmas lunch for people who are homeless or on their own at Christmas time in greater Hobart. The lunch is for about 400 people and a gift is given to all those who attend. Students from The Friends’ School community are annually involved with donating gifts, serving lunch and giving out the presents. A list of the type of items needed has been issued to High School Tutors. Gifts can be passed to Tutors and put in their Tutor Group Giving Tree donations box, or brought to Main Reception on Commercial Road. The Christmas Appeal runs through to End of Year Gathering on 6 December.

Supporting our Sister School Relationship
Each year the Friends’ School welcomes one senior student from our Sister School, Kochi Nishi Senior High School, Japan. The student joins the Year 11 cohort at Clemes and remains with us for the duration of the school year. They are usually scheduled to arrive for the start of the 2017 school year but flight arrangements may vary.
The Friends’ School has a very long-standing relationship Kochi Nishi Senior High School and we are delighted to be able to foster this further by supporting long term exchanges to and from Clemes. This program is part of a reciprocal agreement between The Friends’ School and Kochi Nishi Senior High School, creating opportunities for our students to also take part in short and long-term exchanges.
Next year we welcome Kenta Kubo from Kochi. Kenta is a 16-year-old boy who will complete his first year of senior high school in Japan in February next year. Kenta has been selected on the basis of having excellent academic skills, a strong desire to build international relations and a commitment to fostering the sister school exchange programs. He has a keen interest in singing, especially English and K-Pop.
We are seeking a homestay placement for Kenta for the start of February 2017. Key requirements of the program involve providing him with a supportive family environment in which his understanding of English could be nurtured. All homestay placements organised under the banner of our sister school agreements are voluntary and no remuneration is available. The School, however, would provide all necessary textbooks and uniform items. The minimum preferred home stay period is 3 – 4 months, however, families may choose to host for longer if desired. Or may wish to negotiate a shorter timeframe.
If you are interested in becoming a host family for Kenta or would like further details, please contact the Japan Exchange Co-ordinator, Kim Rowlands, on 6210 2279
The annual Dance Showcase is on next Friday 24 November.
