Head Boy & Head Girl for 2018
Say hello to our new Head Boy and Head Girl for 2018, Sam Watson and Claire Fox. Sam and Claire will be taking over from our current Head Boy and Head Girl, Christopher Alexander and Rosie Smail, who have done a fantastic job as leaders in the School for 2017.
Here is a little bit about Sam and Claire:
“My name is Sam Watson, I joined The Friends’ School this year as a boarder from the North-West Coast. As a new student who is involved with politics I see this as an opportunity to bring new ideas and a different perspective to student leadership at Friends’. I’m looking forward to working with all members of the community to best represent the School.”
“My name is Claire Fox and I have been involved with Friends’ since 2013. As Head Girl, I am looking forward to celebrating the strong diversity within our school community and hope to work collaboratively with the staff, students, and elected council to create effective change. As we approach our last year at Friends’, I look forward to the opportunity to lead the School and promote a cohesive school environment.”
We look forward to strong leadership from Sam and Claire in 2018.
Congratulations to both our sailing teams who represented the School and Australia at the 2017 Interdominion Championships, which were held at Sandringham Yacht Club, where the best school teams from New Zealand competed against the top Australian school teams.
The Friends’ Girls, co-captained by Australian Sailing Youth Team member Jasmin Galbraith and Issi DeClerk, took out the finishing three wins.
These Friends’ girls only started sailing together at the beginning of the year, and have now added the Interdominion Championships to their Tasmanian and Australian Championship victories earlier in the year.
The Friends’ Open Team finished second in the open division, as Wentworth College from New Zealand dominated the field.
Chinese Speech Competition Winner
Congratulations to Morag Anderson, winner of the 2017 Chinese Bridge Speech Competition in Melbourne. Morag will represent Australia at the international level in China from 13 – 20 October. Morag is in Year 11 and is studying IB Chinese. For the competition in Melbourne, Morag delivered a speech in Chinese which was followed by a culture performance. She won the first place out of 20 candidates from different schools in the state of Victoria. This enabled her to join the international Chinese proficiency competition, with approximately 300 other students from more than 90 countries around the world. Morag will spend two weeks in Beijing and Kunming. We wish Morag good luck for the competition and a great experience in China.
Curious about making robots, 3D printing, physical computing, video and print media, design technology or composing music? Students, parents and the community are invited to the first Friends’ Maker Fair, 4.00pm – 6.00pm Wednesday 25 October in The Farrall Centre.
Students will showcase projects they have made during the year and there will be an opportunity for you to try some of the technologies.

P&F Holiday Season Cards
This year, the P&F will be selling packs of Christmas and Holiday Season cards featuring student art as a fundraiser. All students from Kinder to Grade 12 are encouraged to submit an entry in their choice of media (hard copy, A4 size) on the theme of “What Christmas (or the Holiday Season) means to me”. Five outstanding artworks will be chosen to feature on the P&F Christmas and Holiday Season cards. Artworks will be judged not only on artistic merit and creativity, but also on the basis of their transferability to a 10x15cm card format. Entries must be submitted no later than Friday 27 October (end of week 2, Term 4) into boxes provided in Morris and High School Reception areas. The student’s name should not appear on the face of the artwork, however each entry should be clearly identified with name and class/year level of entrant attached to the back of the artwork.
The School Shop will be closed on the final day of term, Friday 29 September and for the school holiday period. The Shop will open for Term 4 at 8.00am on Monday 16 October on its usual schedule which can be found on the website here.
We would like to remind all families that the procedure to withdraw a student from Friends’ is to provide one term’s notice in writing, addressed to the Principal. If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Enrolments Office on 6210 2286 to discuss.
Farewell to Term 3
